People acquire a huge amount of expertise during their lives but don't realise that writing about what they know could bring in valuable extra income.

Many people are passionate about their hobbies. Over the years they gather a host of knowledge and information, but take it for granted. They don’t realise that the simple act of writing articles and sharing what they know with others, could not only bring in extra cash, but also be of great assistance to people all over the world.

Articles are in demand on many different subjects:

  • Do you love reading? Become a book reviewer. You’ll indulge your passion and will find publishers sending you books to review at no cost.
  • Do you spend hours gardening? Perhaps you have developed specific knowledge about how best to grow things in your part of the world. Write articles about gardening and you’ll find that others are grateful for your tips.
  • Is travel your favourite pastime? Travel writing is for you. Keep a journal and write about the places you have visited. People embarking on a journey, enjoy being forewarned about pitfalls or places not to miss.
  • Do you enjoy cooking? Share your favourite recipes or tips on cooking.

Sharing Skills

In the days before mass media, people would go to their neighbours for advice. In a small community there would always be a local expert for everything.

For example in rural communities there would always be the midwife, a woman with no formal training, just the experience of helping women in the village with their births.

Someone would be good at carpentry; another would be an expert with plumbing; another would make clothes, or shoes. People helped each other and traded and bartered their knowledge and talents. Later, they would pass on what they knew to apprentices. Everyone acquires knowledge through experience.

The Internet has Made the World a Village

Nowadays we turn to the internet to find answers, and articles on all subjects are sought after. Some people may have professional qualifications, but life experience can be worth much more.

You may think you have nothing special to offer, but perhaps as a mother, you have evolved interesting ways to help your child to learn through play; or perhaps you have tips on keeping children amused on long car journeys; or you know the best way to remove tomato ketchup stains from carpets!

Pass on Your Tips

Anyone who has ever encountered a problem whilst trying to do something, and who has found a way to solve that problem, has an important piece of information that is worth passing on.

DIY tips to make sure that your shelves stay up on the walls, or crafty ways to feed water to your plants while on vacation can be just the piece of advice that someone out there is looking for.

Help Someone Through a Difficult Time

Events in life such as bereavements, births, family and marriage problems, can render people helpless and confused.

If you have lived through difficult events, and learned from your experience about the best way to cope, then your knowledge could benefit others. For some people, just finding out that someone else has gone through what they are going through and survived can be a comfort. It can be just the sort of support they need to give them the strength to carry on.

With a little research, you'll soon be able to pitch your ideas to an editor.

Someone, somewhere, will value your advice. And you may find that you profit by giving it.
