- Platform
So, how does one get a platform?
I've read the standard, online advice about writing articles, blogging, etc. But even THAT is difficult. I have a site here at the Suite for example - including a blog since I'm a Feature Writer. Not many hits. Certainly not enough to even remotely impress a publisher or agent.
What's an aspiring book author like me to do?

You have hit on an important issue, and one that is no doubt frustrating. I plan on writing about this in some depth in the future. It is too large a topic to address here, or even in one article, so look for us to eventually visit this topic many times.
Thanks for writing!

'Based on what I see in the publishing world, an aspiring nonfiction writer better have a national platform'
Barb will be able to do the national platform bit, but one other thing that I heard is important is the 'elevator pitch'. A simple two sentance, delivered in 30 seconds pitch, saying what you book's message is. If you cannot condense it to that, then your idea is too vague. So maybe start on the pitch until Barb gets to the national platform???

- Platform
I understand. I'll stand by. However, I would have to say that I've read countless articles and books on the book publishing industry. This issue (platform) is the one that I've found to be covered only superficially in most books and magazines. It's been very frustrating.

- Any plans for this subject?
Brian,
I read ALOT about writing and publishing -- I have a couple proposals under consideration at a couple houses -- and I found a chapter about platforms in Author 101. I'm not an expert - Barbara could obviously tell you alot more, but what I read was interesting, so I wrote an article about it! It'll at least give you something to think about while you're waiting.....

Hi, Brian!
We've posted the first of your requested series of articles and a blog about platform today. It's a topic that confuses many who are not actively selling books to trade publishers. We've started at the top, which is necessary to your understanding of what platform really is. Do not become dismayed.
Thanks for writing.
