» Feature Writer Barbara Pytel - vanity press

Barb, Thank you so much for clarifying the difference between vanity presses and self-publishing. I fully understand the difference now. It sounds like vanity presses don't really care if you do well or not, ever have a successful career, or have a best seller on your hands. Their money is made when you pay them and little more happens after that. What I find especially troublesome is that they now own your book. What if it had been a best-seller? What if that book could have spearheaded your career? It is all over. I thank honest people like you for clarifying this and preventing serious mistakes being made by the rest of us. Great to know there is some honor and dignity in the publishing business.

I agree with Pytel - it is an excellant article. One thing that I have found is that through writing a blog and being a writer on sites such as this, I have been approached by vanity presses who want me to write a book with them.
They get the email address and try to woo you with the personal touch - and one quoted from my website, so this was directly targeted at me.

Wow, Kate. That's a new wrinkle I hadn't heard before. These folks keep changing their methods, adapting new ways to find victims.

Thanks for sharing this.
